A new initiative by Water Lands and Resource Stewardship and the Squamish First Nation proposes Sea to Sky land use objectives for numerous areas in our region, including Gambier Island. In that proposal there are significant restrictions on public access and use of a large tract of Gambier’s public land, ostensibly for the protection of the environment and indigenous cultural values. Members of all four clubs with outstations on the island are used to hiking to the various lakes and maintaining trails and roads for safe passage across the area. Access to many of these may be in jeopardy. CBCYC sent the attached letter to WLRS with expressing our concerns that parts of the new regulations are poorly conceived while others place unreasonable restrictions on public transit and trail and road maintenance.
